Day Off!

Today was our day off and we could do anything we wanted. The group decided our time was best spent exploring the other amazing wildlife the Osa Peninsula had to offer. We woke before the sun, drove to Puerto Jimenez, and took a very bumpy boat ride to Corcovado National Park. The marine wildlife has been extraordinary, but we knew there were equally amazing things to be discovered in the forest.

As we were heading out of the gulf, we had one last amazing marine encounter. We saw a mother humpback feeding her baby. We could tell she was feeding because you could see a large portion of her back above the surface and she wasn’t moving. It was quite a spectacular sight! The ride to Corcovado was beautiful, but very bumpy. A few people experienced some sea sickness, but they recovered quickly once we were on land. During our four hour hike in Corcovado, we saw four species of monkey, a tapir, anteaters, sloths, coati, aguti, scarlet macaws, a toucan, and many other species of birds. For how short we traveled, we were all amazed with the number of species we were able to see.

DAY 8

Sarah "Bee" Compton

Reflection

Today was the day of awe and gratitude. The waters of Gulfo Dulce are incredibly calm and we were spoiled by our daily outings. We felt the waves of the ocean as soon as we exited the Gulf and a few of us experienced sea sickness for the very first time. However, all of the discomfort from the sea sickness, heat, and humidity was immediately forgotten when we saw wildlife. It’s pretty incredible how you are walking along a trail feeling hot, sweaty, and mildly miserable, but the instant you see something all those feelings disappear and you are completely captivated by the awe.

I spent the majority of the boat ride soaking up the sun and scenery while feeling an immense amount of gratitude for all we were able to learn and experience this week. I am immensely grateful for the people I was able to share this journey with. Sharing such incredible experiences in a remote setting allows a quick bond to form. We laugh, joke, and share ideas as if we have known one another for years.  I am grateful for this experience and the amazing people that have been a part of this journey.
